Repairing a mirror working at rotational speeds up to 15,000 rpm

We like an unusual and challenging project here at Laser Beam Products, so when one of our customers asked if we could repair a one-off, custom designed mirror that was used with rotational speeds of up to 15,000 rpm, we jumped at the chance.

The customer was running a system for the high speed engraving of printing plates. The mirror in question was Aluminium based, and worked in the near infra red.  It had been very carefully balanced and weighted by the OEM to rotate without run out. It would have been very expensive to buy a new one, so repairing it seemed an excellent alternative.

Our repair work was successful, and the mirror was returned to its original optical specification. We also managed to maintain the balancing needed for its high speed use, and saved the customer a considerable amount of money.
